CU law school to honor seven at banquet in March

BOULDER — Seven Coloradans have been chosen to receive alumni awards from the University of Colorado Law School for significant contributions to the legal profession.

Norman Brownstein and Steven W. Farber of Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck LLP, U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., chief federal district judge Marcia S. Krieger and Children’s Hospital Colorado chief administrative officer Michelle Lucero are among those to be honored at the school’s 35th annual awards ceremony, planned for March 9 at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts.

Brownstein and Farber will receive the William Lee Knous Award, the law school’s highest alumni honor. Honored for distinguished achievement will be Gardner in the public sector, Krieger in the judiciary and Lucero as a corporate counsel.

Law school dean Phil Weiser will present two Dean’s Choice awards, recognizing individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the law school this year. Fiona Arnold, executive director of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade, will receive the Dean Edward C. King Pay it Forward Award. Paul and Norma Barash and David and Jed Barash, parents and brothers respectively of Daniel Barash, will receive the Richard Schaden Adopted Alumnus Award.

Upon their graduation from CU’s law school in 1968, classmates Brownstein and Farber founded what is now Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, a firm encompassing 15 offices and nearly 300 attorneys. Brownstein is involved in many activities on behalf of the University of Colorado and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, serves as a director of National Jewish Health and a trustee of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, and is a past presidential appointee of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council.

Farber is founder and chairman of the board of the American Transplant Foundation, serves on the boards of the Anti-Defamation League, Children’s Diabetes Foundation, Race to Erase M.S. Foundation, the Children’s Hospital Foundation, Citywide Banks, Denver Health Foundation, Aurora Economic Development Corp. and Alliance for Choice in Education. He is a capital campaign chairman for Denver Hospice.

Gardner, a 2001 graduate of CU’s law school, served in the Colorado House of Representatives from 2005 to 2011, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2010 and to the U.S. Senate in 2014.

Krieger, a 1979 CU law school grad, began her career in a small civil litigation firm, served on the U.S. bankruptcy court and was appointed to the federal court in 2002. Krieger co-founded Our Courts, an adult civic educational program providing impartial information about how the legal system works.

Lucero, who earned her degree from Colorado Law in 1989, also is “chief flash mob officer” at Children’s Hospital. She serves on the Winter Park Advisory Council for the City and County of Denver, chairs the Metropolitan State University board of trustees, serves on the Denver Metropolitan Chamber Leadership Foundation board and does pro bono work for the Papua New Guinea Tribal Foundation.

Before being appointed OEDIT director in January by Gov. John Hickenlooper, Arnold was owner and president of River North Investment Co. LLC. Her legal career began in Australia before she joined Jones Day in Dallas. She moved to Colorado in 2001.

Dan Barash, a 2002 graduate of CU’s law school, became a public defender in Colorado Springs before his death at age 30. His family created the Dan Barash Scholarship Fund to support students with demonstrated interest in criminal defense work.
