Fort Collins, Brighton, Aspen in running for $5M energy efficiency prize

FORT COLLINS – Georgetown University has selected the city of Fort Collins, city of Brighton and town of Aspen as semifinalists competing for a $5 million prize in an energy efficiency contest.

The three communities are among a total of 50 competing nationally to reduce their electrical and natural-gas consumption over the next two years. Georgetown University, which will use the contest to study ways to improve energy efficiency, will announce finalists in 2017.

Colorado is one of few states where the university has named several competing communities. The contest consists of cities with populations ranging between 5,000 and 250,000 from a total of 27 states.

Cities must show a decrease in energy consumption over two years. They also must show that other cities and towns across the country can take similar actions to reduce energy use.

Fort Collins and Aspen will participate in the program while incorporating specific targets to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Fort Collins aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050. Aspen has a goal to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions 30 percent by 2020.
