DOI launches health care cost study

The Colorado Division of Insurance has taken the first step in its study of health care costs in the state, holding a meeting with various health care experts from around the state Feb. 13.

“There was a considerable amount of knowledge in that room,´ said Marguerite Salazar, commissioner of insurance, in a statement. “It will be a challenge to dig into the costs of health care and the factors behind those costs, but this group is up to the challenge. This is the first step in a journey to better understanding.”

The group plans to have its analysis of Colorado health care costs finished in May.

At the meeting were the following health care experts and Colorado residents:


  • Marguerite Salazar – Commissioner of Insurance, Division of Insurance
  • Tracy Campbell – Director, All Payers Claims Database, Center for Innovation and Value in Health Care
  • Edie Sonn – Interim CEO and Vice President of Strategic Initiatives, Center for Innovation and Value in Health Care
  • Chris Tholen – Vice President of Financial Policy, Colorado Hospital Association
  • Ben Price – Executive Director, Colorado Association of Health Plans
  • Marc Reece – Associate Director, Colorado Association of Health Plans
  • Tom Jankovsky – Garfield County Commissioner
  • Jim Markuson – Garfield County resident
  • Dr. Alfred Gilchrist – CEO, Colorado Medical Society
  • Dr. John Bender – Chairman and President, Colorado Medical Society
  • Debra Judy – Policy Director, Colorado Consumer Health Initiative
  • Amy Downs – Senior Director for Policy and Analysis, Colorado Health Institute
  • Kyle Brown – Senior Health Policy Analyst, Colorado Center on Law and Policy
