Voters will decide LifeBridge annexation

LONGMONT – Voters in Longmont will be asked to decide in a special election if land in Weld County will be annexed for LifeBridge Christian Church’s proposed mixed-use Union development.

The Longmont city council on Oct. 16 agreed to vote either next week or Nov. 13 on a resolution to hold a special election, possibly in January, in effect voiding its 6-1 decision on Aug. 14 to annex the church’s land on Colorado Highway 119 south of Union Reservoir.

Longmont residents circulated a petition in September to overturn the council’s vote and gathered the required number of valid signatures, verified by City Clerk Valeria Skitt.

Skitt said the city has 150 days to hold an election on the Union project, which gives the city until March. She said Jan. 22 is a likely date for a special election when voters also will be asked to fill a city council seat vacated by the winner of the mayor’s race in November, either Karen Benker or Roger Lange.

The preliminary plan for the 348-acre Union development includes between 300 and 700 homes, 680,000 square feet of commercial space – including a sports and fitness center – as well as 1 million square feet devoted to religious buildings.

The church’s business organization, Corporation for Community Christian Connections, expects to develop most of the project during the next 10 to 20 years.
